The Church decided to get a fresh start with a brand new building which would be rooted in their unique tradition and style. The layout and geometry are derived from the theology and incorporate seven domes and twelve columns with the altar placed on the site to allow for future expansion for additional community functions. The congregation needed an expansion to accommodate more social, educational and recreational functions for various groups. The new gymnasium building includes a full size space for sports and spectators as well as education and multi-use spaces. The design challenge was to provide a new building that would blend successfully with the unique traditional Orthodox style of the original church building. The second challenge was to ensure that the original church and the new gymnasium building would be designed for a future connecting link allowing interior passage between the original and the new portions of the facility. Parking was also expanded to accommodate the new functions. The congregation’s Committee worked collaboratively with the architects to envision a renovation and expansion that would increase functional space while also upgrading and modernizing the building. Meeting spaces and offices of a variety of sizes were provided in the new addition as well as a major upgrade to the existing foyer. The new foyer boasts tall ceilings and abundant light with a clear connection from the south to the north entry and views from the upper level. An existing church in the established neighborhood of Acadia was a suitable fit as long as it could be renovated. The renovations included the provision of a new elevator to connect the various levels of the building. The renovated foyer includes a vaulted ceiling that connects the west and east entrances (street and parking). The new worship space for 100 is designed to enhance the vibrant audio and video aspects of the worship. This north Calgary group of believers required a new building to accommodate their church functions and daycare needs. The challenge for the architect began with a uniquely shaped site with limited access in and out. A second challenge was the City of Calgary’s requirement for the north side of the building to enhance the “gateway” aesthetic for Stoney Trail north. This congregation began with a desire to build a church in a modern (not traditional) style. Stone, glass, metal and stucco were combined to develop an eye-catching form with bold roof lines of intersecting wedges. The large upper foyer window creates the shape of the cross to emphasize this Christian group. The interior is comprised of four functional elements all connected from the central foyer: Worship, Fellowship Hall, Education and Administration. The Education zone also provides space for a week-day Daycare program. In collaboration with the congregation’s representatives, the interior design was to be dramatic and industrial while maintaining the warmth of the community. The worship space provides for the dynamic music and dance typical of this group. The building was to contribute to the narrative of the liturgy, which commemorates the past, celebrates the present and anticipates the future. This linear characteristic is reflected in the spatial planning of the church design. The entrance is from the west through the foyer/narthex (place of greeting) with anticipation of the approach to the presence of God in the nave beyond the solid doors. The baptismal font is located within the entrance to the nave to reflect how the rite of baptism is the initiation into the Christian Community. Worshippers face east as per tradition. Suites are afforded gorgeous views of the Rocky Mountains and ample outdoor amenity space. Addition Parish Hall & Meeting Spaces $3.8 million Completed in 2015 St. James Parish in Okotoks is a vibrant and established Catholic Church community who required additional facility space for fellowship, meetings and administration. The design philosophy challenge was to create a fluid connection between the existing church aesthetic and the new social gathering spaces. Through a collaborative process with the architects and the Parish representatives, the new social gathering spaces were designed to accommodate banquets for 300, smaller group meetings and sacramental preparation space. Offices were newly located to allow weekday functionality. Parking was expanded and improved.
